Mostly because of the virus, during 2020, Janice and I took a drive somewhere on Maryland’s Eastern Shore or in Delaware once a week, usually on Wednesday. The nine counties in Maryland and the three in Delaware have a lot of history and countless beautiful places and sights. We ranged from Rising Sun to Crisfield and Tilghman Island to Cape Henlopen, and many, many points in between. These are seven of my favorite photos taken during our drives.
Harriet Tubman in State House, February 20
Janice and I were in Annapolis on Feb. 20 to testify at a hearing (before covid shutdown). Upon learning this statue was in the Old House Chamber, we hastened to see it. Harriet was a small woman, yet so determined, so focused! There’s a statue of Frederick Douglass nearby. (iPhone)

Rock Hall Harbor, February 20
Rock Hall’s harbor is motionless on a still winter evening just after sunset. This was taken from the wharf next to Waterman’s restaurant, looking toward Haven Harbour South marina. Note the Great blue heron loitering on piling. (Camera)

White Horse in Barn, June 3
On Rte. 311 between Goldsboro and Henderson, Caroline County. On one of our outings, we spent the day driving to each of the county’s 10 incorporated towns. Janice spotted the horse in the barn, and we quickly made a U-turn to catch it. (Camera)

Evening Thunderhead, June 18
From the Tundra Swan boardwalk at Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge, our favorite spot for sunset photos. In the late 1980s, we started driving from Baltimore to Eastern Neck to spot birds, and it was a principal reason we decided to move to Rock Hall in 2005. (iPhone)

Ancient Trucks, September 16
These relics are resting in a shed along Rte. 352 in Wicomico County, the main road to the Whitehaven ferry. We were on our way to Rumbley, an end-of-the-road waterman’s town in Somerset County. (iPhone)

Exploding Milkweed, October 2
At Pickering Creek Audubon Center, in Talbot County. Pickering offers two reasonably long trails to hike and spot birds, one through a restored wetland, mostly open, and the other through woods along the creek. Three cheers for my iPhone, which I used for this photo!

Late Afternoon, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, November 25
This view is looking south from the Wildlife Drive in Dorchester County. Rarely is it this still! The stakes’ purpose is anyone’s guess. (iPhone)
